French Toast Sandwich

A savory twist on the popular breakfast and brunch treat of French Toast, with cheese and tomatoes. This filled and fried sandwich is the perfect camping or weekend breakfast on the back yard BBQ.

The basic premise is a whole tomato and cheese sandwich, dipped in egg, then fried on the BBQ. You can also add fresh herbs, like basil, for extra flavor. It works well for breakfast or lunch, and is warming and filling.

Eat alone or partner with bacon or sausages to make it into a larger meal.

Ingredients

2 slices bread

1 slice cheese

2 slices tomato

salt and pepper, to taste

1 egg

dash of milk

oil, as needed

Recipe Directions

  1. Make the sandwich with the two slices of bread, cheese, tomatoes, salt, and pepper.

  2. In a shallow bowl, mix the egg and milk. Dip the whole sandwich in it, turning to get maximum coverage and use up all of the egg mixture.

  3. Fry each side of the sandwich on an oiled BBQ until golden brown (this can also be done in a skillet).

  4. Variation: Once you have the idea nailed down, you can make any filling you want. Ham, chicken, pesto, or any other of your favorite sandwich fillings.
