Easy Picnic Hummus

Hummus is an easy-to-make dip that is high in protein making it perfect for the outdoors whether at a picnic, on a hike, or camping. Once you have mastered this basic recipe then you can tweak it to your personal flavor preferences.

The foundation ingredient in hummus is chickpeas. These may be carried in cans already softened or dried with will need rehydrating and cooking before making the hummus. Both these options travel well for outdoor adventures.

Tahini is another key ingredient, this is basically ground sesame seeds. A little like how peanuts are ground down to make peanut butter. The other flavor ingredients are lemon and cumin. 

This version is served plain but it may be served topped with olive oil, paprika, and/or sumac.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans chickpeas drained
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 2 lemons juiced
  • 3/4 cup tahini
  • dash cumin

Directions

  • Mash the chickpeas with a fork until a smooth paste is formed.
  • Add to the chickpeas the slat, lemon juice, tahini, and cumin. Mix well to combine.
  • Taste the hummus and adjust to your prefered taste with additional salt, tahini, and/or, cumin.
