Cooked in a Dutch oven, this apple spice dump cake is a quick and easy dessert option for the outdoors. The ingredients are easy to find at the grocery store and easy to transport to your campground. For the most flavor, used a spiced cake mix. You can also substitute vanilla cake mix, for a milder flavor.
When making the cake be careful to pick canned pie apples with no spice. If you use spiced apples, combined with the spice in the cake, it is too overpowering in flavor. The butterscotch chips offer a different flavor and texture to the cake and fruit.
When cooked there is a distinct fruit layer at the bottom and a fluffy cake layer on the top. This is similar to other popular camping apple desserts such as the apple cobbler, crumble, and buckle. Try serving this dump cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
