Camping Spaghetti Bolognese

Spaghetti Bolognese simmering in a large pot on a gas stove.

The beef Spaghetti Bolognese sauce recipe just got a lot easier thanks to a jar of prepared sauce. You can cook this comforting meal in about 45 minutes on your camp stove. Traditionally served over pasta, bolognese sauce is also delicious on top of polenta or baked potatoes.

If you don’t have prepared pasta sauce, you can swap it out with two cans of diced tomatoes and a generous pinch of Italian herbs. Or, you can make sauce from scratch and bring it with you to camp.

Have fun with this simple recipe and mix it up to match your tastes. Use a combination of ground beef and pork, throw in a bit of bacon, or use some fresh herbs to give it a pop of flavor. This version has a lot of vegetables but can be scaled down if you prefer to be meatier.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef (beef mince)
  • 1 yellow onion diced
  • 4 ribs celery diced
  • 1 red bell pepper (capsicum), seeded and diced
  • 1 carrot diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 jar pasta sauce (24-ounce | 475ml)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 box (19 oz) spaghetti
  • shredded Parmesan cheese for serving

Directions

  • Cook the beef in a saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat until browned, stirring often to break up any chunks, for about 10 minutes.
  • Add the onions, celery, peppers, carrots, and garlic. Cook until softened, about 7 minutes.
  • Add the pasta sauce and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook to meld the flavors, for at least 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  • Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook until al dente, according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  • Place the spaghetti in the bowl then ladle over the bolognese sauce and finally top with the parmesan cheese.
