Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ is the brainchild of TLC’s BBQ Pitmasters Head Cook Harry Soo. Harry started competing in 2008, where his entry into the competitive circuit was purely by chance. Fascinated by BBQ contests on Food TV, Harry’s co-worker Janice asked him to help out with an annual fundraiser. Further pushing his BBQ career, Harry and his co-workers were inspired by the movie The Bucket List, released in 2008. They took the idea to another level, by allowing co-workers to “stretch” each other’s personal goals with activities that would be a challenge given your particular personality. One of Harry’s stretch goals was to compete in a BBQ contest.
The Slap Yo’ Daddy two-man team was formed in 2008 with Head Cook Harry and Assistant Cook Mark. By day they worked information technology jobs, and on weekends they cooked and hung out with friends and family. In 2010, Benny stepped in for Mark, who left to spend more time with his family. In 2011, Harry became a one-man team as Benny returned to cooking on his team as Funtime BBQ.
In the Season Finale, Slap Yo’ Daddy amazed viewers on TLC’s BBQ Pitmasters Season One in 2010 by defeating all the teams in the show including two BBQ World Champions in the winner-take-all Rib Throwdown in Texas. Since then, Slap Yo’ Daddy has received many awards including Reserve Grand Champion in Kansas City in 2009 and 80+ first place finishes in various categories.
As it is said in the south: when you eat something you like, you want to go slap somebody. And, that’s how Harry coined his team name: the meat is so good, you want to slap someone. As a single dad, Harry named the team Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ.
