A robust outdoor meal, Camp Spam Risotto uses mainly canned ingredients which are easy to transport and store in the outdoors. Though the ingredients are simple, the flavor is very rich. Because Spam and cream of celery soup can be quite salty, don’t season the risotto until after everything is cooked.
This is a foundation recipe that can easily be varied by changing ingredients. You can use an alternate soup flavor or add more vegetables. The water can be substituted with milk for a creamier consistency.
This is a perfect meal to pack as an emergency or backup dinner, due to the heavy reliance on canned and dry goods. The exception is the onion which can be left out or substituted for a dried version.
Camp Spam Risotto Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 can Spam
- 1 yellow onion
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 can cream of celery soup
- water
- 4 cups cooked rice
Equipment
- pot
Directions
- Dice the spam and onion.
- Heat the pot over the gas stove or campfire, then add the oil, spam, and onions. Cook until the spam is browned, stirring regularly.
- Add the can of cream of celery soup to the pot along with a can’s worth of water. Use this water to wash out the last of the soup that may be stuck to the can.
- Heat until the soup just starts to boil then stir in the rice. Heat while stirring until hot and starting to simmer. Don’t be tempted to add salt until you have tasted it first as the spam can be quite salty. Serve straight away.
