French toast is easy to prepare over the campfire and provides a warm and filling breakfast. Bring along your favorite condiments, like maple syrup or powdered sugar, or serve the toast with freshly picked blackberries.
In a large shallow dish, beat the eggs until uniform. Add the milk, sugar, vanilla, and spices and beat until mixed.
Heat a cast-iron skillet over an even layer of campfire coals.
Dip a slice of bread in the egg mixture and let it soak for 10 to 30 seconds (depending on how fresh the bread is). Let the excess drip off, then sprinkle with a little extra sugar.
Melt the butter in the skillet and add the bread. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 3 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
